NSW:Fukushima worries to swell Hiroshima rally
Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster is expected to motivate hundreds of
people to today's Hiroshima Day rally in Sydney.
Organisers say the reports coming out of Japan are seeing people around the world make
their views on nuclear power known.
Beyond Nuclear Initiative campaigner NATALIE WASLEY says there's been a strong resurgence
of anti-nuclear activity across Australia and across Europe, as well as in Japan, and
they're expecting a large gathering for today's rally.
Hiroshima Day marks the anniversary of the dropping of the atom bomb on the Japanese
city of Hiroshima towards the end of World War II in 1945.

NSW:Decommissioned HMAS Adelaide towed to sea
SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - The decommissioned HMAS Adelaide has left its berth in Sydney
Harbour for its controversial scuttling off the NSW Central Coast.
The former frigate was towed out of the harbour at dawn on Monday and is due to be
sunk off Avoca Beach on Wednesday.
It comes as NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell said his government would not be "spooked"
by community groups opposed to the sinking.
The campaign group No Ship Action Group is concerned about the environmental impact
of scuttling the ship, particularly in regard to lead-based paint said to be on the vessel.
The group met on Sunday in a last-ditch attempt to block the sinking, asking the NSW
Ombudsman to investigate.
But Mr O'Farrell said the scuttling would go ahead on the previous government's timetable.
"We are abiding by their timetable and we are not going to be spooked by ... claims
by residents groups," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.
"I imagine that if the Ombudsman had concerns he would have raised those concerns earlier
... at the end of the day decisions have to be made."

Supt McGuiggan said about six classrooms had been engulfed in flames but said the blaze
had been contained.
Hazardous material crews were being sent to the school because it is thought the fire
began in a science classroom.
"The messages coming back from the fire ground this morning have been extremely positive,"
he told Macquarie Radio Network.
"What the crews have been able to do is commence what we call a defensive firefighting position.
"That has been successful in the early stages of preventing the fire spreading to other
parts of the building.
"We've seen some really good work done out there by the firefighters this morning."
Some school staff were at the scene, Supt McGuiggan said.

Qld: Danger aground coal carrier will break apart on reef
Aircraft are spraying chemical dispersants on oil patches off the Queensland coast
.. after a Chinese cargo carrier ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef yesterday.
Queensland Premier ANNA BLIGH says the coal carrier hit the reef at full speed .. 15
kilometres outside the shipping lane and about 70 kilometres east of Great Keppel Island.
She says State Emergency Service crews and councils are on standby in case any oil
reaches land over the next couple of days .. most likely beaches in the Shoalwater Bay
National Park.
The premier says the badly damaged Shen Neng .. carrying 950 tonnes of heavy fuel oil
and 65 thousand tonnes of coal .. is in danger of breaking up.
Captain PATRICK QUIRK .. general manager of Maritime Safety Queensland .. says they're
seeking information about the impact the cargo could have on the reef environment should
the ship break up .. and he doesn't have an answer at the moment.
LARISSA WATERS .. a spokeswoman for the Queensland Greens .. says the state government's
been blinded by coal royalties and its short-sightedness will go down in history as killing
the reef.

NSW: Cancer surgeon posthumously honoured
SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - Cancer surgeon Chris O'Brien has been posthumously made an Officer
of the Order of Australia (AO) during a short and simple ceremony in Sydney.
Mr O'Brien was given the award for a lifetime of work helping cancer patients across
Australia and for establishing a new dedicated cancer facility in Sydney, which his wife,
Gail, said she hoped would make a huge impact on preventing the disease.
Mrs O'Brien spoke movingly about her husband's work, his passion for life and his compassion
for those with cancer - the disease he finally succumbed to in June, having been diagnosed
with a brain tumour in 2006.
"I'm really honoured to be here. It's just a wonderful day. It doesn't bring Chris
back but it has been a great day," Mrs O'Brien told reporters after the ceremony at the
Governor-General of Australia's house in Kirribilli.
"He'd be delighted by all this. He knew he was going to get the award but I don't think
he knew there would be something like this."
Professor O'Brien became a director of the Sydney Cancer Centre at the Royal Prince
Alfred Hospital, Sydney, in 2003.
A specialist in head and neck cancer, he went on to lobby for and secure substantial
government funding for the $1.3 billion Lifehouse Centre, a dedicated 240-bed treatment
centre at the Royal Prince Alfred, due for completion later this year.
He was also well known for appearing on Channel 9's RPA reality show.
Mrs O'Brien said the Lifehouse Centre would provide a fitting, lasting legacy for her
husband, and that the "trail-blazing" research he started would continue to aid patients.
"Lifehouse Centre will be a living legacy. The research he carried out will help so
many people. He really was a trail-blazer, he was ahead of his time," she said.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who became a close friend of Prof O'Brien, and the Governor-General
Quentin Bryce were present at the ceremony.
"He made a rich, valuable and selfless contribution to Australia," Ms Bryce said.
"Australia feels indebted to him. He reached out to us all. He certainly inspired me
when I met him. We will ensure his legacy endures."

Fed: Tamils protest outside Kirribilli House
By Stephanie Gardiner
SYDNEY, April 13 AAP - Hundreds of Tamil demonstrators protesting outside the prime
minister's Sydney residence say they will stay there until the Australian government urges
the Sri Lankan government to call for a ceasefire with the Tamil Tigers.
More than 1,000 Tamils - including three hunger strikers - staged an all-night rally
outside Kirribilli House as part of a global protest aimed at brokering a ceasefire between
the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil Tigers.
The protest began as a three-man hunger strike in Parramatta, in Sydney's west, on
Saturday but moved to the prime minister's official northern Sydney residence amid reports
the Sri Lankan government had broken into the "no-fire zone" in the island nation.
The Sri Lankan government says it is in the final stages of defeating the separatist
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who launched a campaign in 1972 to create a separate
Tamil homeland on the island. The remaining Tigers are trapped in the "no-fire" zone,
in the island's northeast, along with thousands of civilians.
But Colombo is under pressure to agree to a ceasefire, after claims that 3,500 civilians
have been killed in the first three months of 2009.
About 400 protesters remained on the road outside the prime minister's house on Monday morning.
The sombre protest turned noisy before 9am (AEST) with the group chanting "Australia,
save the Tamils", "We want ceasefire" and "Stop genocide".
Men, women and young children waved red Tamil flags and banners saying: "Impose sanction
on Sri Lanka".
Many had been lying on mats and pillows on the road early in the morning.
Protester Geetha Mano, 24, says the rally will continue until they get some response
from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd or Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith.
Ms Mano said the protesters were calling for the ceasefire, for food and medicine to
be sent to the Tamil civilians and for Tamil people to have the right to live where they
choose.
"It's about time the voice of these people gets heard ... after all, we are all humans,"
she told AAP.
"We ask the international community and the Australian government to urge, to push
the Sri Lankan government to call for a ceasefire and to meet these demands so that these
people get the right to live freely and with freedom of choice."
Mr Rudd is currently in Canberra, and his office on Monday said it would not be commenting
on the protest.
Police are monitoring the peaceful protest and many streets surrounding Kirribilli
House have been closed.

As Climate Change Minister PENNY WONG prepares to fly to Poland, for the UN climate
change conference .. the poll shows 63 per cent of us want Australia to set a strong example.

NSW: New "Quitline" to help tackle obesity
SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - Just like the Quitline helped thousands stop smoking, the NSW government
is hoping a new "get healthy" line will tackle the obesity epidemic.
The NSW Get Healthy Advice Line has been set up to help people who want to get fit
and enjoy a better lifestyle.
It is part of the state government's $36 million obesity package, which includes a
statewide marketing campaign to promote the importance of exercise and healthy eating.
The package also includes weight-loss surgery for morbidly obese people, a measure
the government announced over the weekend.
NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher said people could use the advice line to sign up for
a free coaching program with follow-up calls and individually tailored counselling.
"There is no doubt that behavioural change can be very difficult and this advice line
means people won't have to do it on their own," Ms Meagher said in a statement today.
"It's based on the very successful Quitline which has helped thousands of smokers quit
the habit and start leading healthier lives."
The government will also establish an obesity prevention research centre and a parenting
program to give support to people with overweight and obese children.
Ms Meagher said the surgery for the morbidly obese would only be a "last resort option".
She said the $36 million package, hopefully, would turnaround the obesity epidemic
which costs NSW about $7 billion a year.

Vic: Fraser calls for dramatic Lib overhaul in Victoria
Former prime minister MALCOLM FRASER says the Victorian Liberal Party has lurched right
.. become dangerously factionalised .. and needs a dramatic overhaul if it's to survive.
Mr FRASER .. who was prime minister from 1975 to 1983 .. has told The Age newspaper
the party is controlled by ideological conservatives who stifle dissent .. and are driving
thousands of rank-and-file members away.
The newspaper says Mr FRASER has sent an e-mail to leading Liberals that calls for
the party's head office to release its control of preselections at state and federal level.
He says preselections should be decided by a plebiscite .. with senate candidates ..
who are now chosen by a central panel .. chosen by a poll of all Victorian party members.
Mr FRASER says this would make it much harder for a faction to control that broader group.
He also says it's important for the power of individual members to be re-established
.. and for branches be re-emphasised.

Vic: Dad refused to call ambulance for three sons, court told
Eds: Note language in 7th par
MELBOURNE, Aug 23 AAP - A father who drove his three young sons to their death in a
dam outside Melbourne on Father's Day twice refused to call an ambulance, a court has
been told.
Robert Farquharson also rejected offers from a passing motorist to jump in the dam
to try to rescue them, the Victorian Supreme Court has heard today.
The 38-year-old has pleaded not guilty in the Victorian Supreme Court to killing Jai,
10, Tyler, seven, and Bailey, two, by driving them into the seven metre-deep dam in Winchelsea,
south-west of Melbourne in September, 2005.
After he drove the boys into the dam he flagged down motorist Shane Atkinson.
Mr Atkinson told the court today he was driving along the Princes Highway toward Geelong
when he saw a man on the side of the road waving his arms around vigorously.
He stopped his car and approached the man, Mr Atkinson said.
"I ran over to him and he was running towards me and I just said what the f*** are
you doing standing on the side of the road - are you trying to kill yourself?" he said.
"He said he wanted to go back to his missus' house so he could tell her that he had
killed his kids.
"He said that he had put his car into a dam and said that he had either had a coughing
fit or he had done the wheel bearing."
Mr Atkinson said he and his passenger Tony McClelland both offered to jump in the dam
and he refused their offers and asked for a cigarette.
"He just said that it was too late, they were already gone."
Farquharson twice refused to call an ambulance, once at the scene and again in the
car on the way back to the house of his estranged wife, Cindy Gambino.
In the car, Mr Atkinson pushed his mobile phone towards Farquharson but he pushed it
away, Mr Atkinson said.
After dropping Farquharson at Ms Gambino's house Mr Atkinson alerted emergency services.
The trial before Justice Cummins continues.

Daniels, Republicans don't care about women
I was gratified to see Rich James' commentary about Mitch Daniels' disgraceful decision to defund Planned Parenthood. Daniels has posited himself as a moderate, but he is the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing.
Besides the unplanned pregnancies that likely will result from women being unable to afford contraception, Indiana is likely to see a rise in HIV, a disease for which Planned Parenthood tests in its clinics. Recent news reports noted that scientists have established that early treatment of HIV can prevent the spread of the disease. Many more women and men will not be able to afford or easily find testing for HIV, thanks to Daniels' decision.
If you go to Planned Parenthood's website, you find an easy-to-use map that shows where you can go to a clinic to get a variety of services, most of them focused on preventive health care.
If you go to the state's website, you are faced with a dizzying series of forms and terms and little concrete information on where you can go for services, not to mention the system assumes that low-income women and men have access to the Internet in the first place.
As Gary is closing its main library due to Draconian budget cuts by the state, more low-income residents will have trouble even accessing information.
Daniels and Republicans clearly do not care about women or, for that matter, mothers. As a mother of four, I am dismayed that cynical political motives have been the basis for a law that will hurt women and mothers.
You can be assured that Cheri Daniels and the wives and daughters of the Republicans in the Legislature who passed this law will continue to have access to contraception, prenatal health care, maternal health care and, yes, abortion if they need it.
Susan Eleuterio

Planned Parenthood involved in genocide
I found it ironic that Post-Tribune columnist Rich James used the religious metaphor of "selling his soul" referring to Gov. Mitch Daniels in signing legislation cutting off state funding for an abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.
Many Christians feel just the opposite — that those who support the killing of unborn babies for the convenience of prospective parents or society are, in fact, the ones who are "selling their souls."
I'm not sure how leftist James and his purported empathy for the poor and minorities reconciles his allegiance to Planned Parenthood and abortion with the genocide that is taking place in the black community in the United States.
Black women make up 13 percent of the female population, yet 36 percent of all abortions involve black women. The number is even more astonishing in big cities like New York, where 57 percent of black pregnancies end in abortion.
It seems the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, is seeing her utopian dream come true in the 21st century. What the KKK and neo-Nazis failed to do is being accomplished through the auspices of abortion and, like Sanger, they are extolling its "virtues."
All this reminds me of the biblical quote in Isaiah 5:20: "What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light dark."
Gary Ziolkowski

Some won't admit truth about 'Meals'
James Donovan, don't hold your breath for someone like Paul Landgrebe to come and find out the truth about Meals on Wheels. They spend their time watching Fox Noise and Mush Limbaugh spewing their venom.
They don't care if it's true or not. If they say it often enough, people who can't think for themselves believe it.
Progressives are called socialists, communists, Nazis and other names.
However, Fox Noise has taken a page out of Hitler's playbook and keeps telling lies until people believe them. A couple examples: Barack Obama was born in Kenya, not America. Obama had death panels for the elderly. Oh, well, I guess the people who believe this nonsense aren't smart enough to know that Hawaii is a state.

HEWLETT-PACKARD: HP delivers simple, integrated pr printer connectivity for USB customers.
M2 PRESSWIRE-9 September 1999-HEWLETT-PACKARD: HP delivers simple, integrated printer connectivity for USB customers (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:090999
* New HP JetDirect Connectivity Card Provides Connectivity Support for USB, Serial and LocalTalk Clients and Hosts
Hewlett-Packard Company today expanded its industry-leading HP JetDirect print-server family with a solution that enables printers to be connected to PCs with a broad range of connectivity options.
The HP JetDirect Connectivity Card for USB/Serial/LocalTalk enables users who were once unable to connect and share printer resources due to port incompatibility to have an integrated printer connectivity solution that supports a wide variety of environments, from iMacs to UNIX(R) system workstations. Simple installation allows users to "plug in and connect" any HP LaserJet printer with an EIO (Enhanced Input/Output) slot to PCs in mixed, non-networked environments.
Connecting printing resources is a common need among all users, from home users to enterprise customers. The JetDirect Connectivity Card is a low-cost connectivity option that enables users in a wide variety of environments to connect to EIO-slotted HP LaserJet printers. For instance, the connectivity card enables USB customers to connect to new Windows(R) 98 PCs and Macintosh workstations, including the iMac.
The JetDirect Connectivity Card also provides an easy way to connect other clients or hosts, such as UNIX systems and mainframes with serial ports and legacy Macintosh computers with LocalTalk ports.
The HP JetDirect Connectivity Card enables all three interfaces to be used simultaneously without any loss in PC or printer performance. Print jobs are automatically queued into the connectivity card's 2MB of memory, which allows the PC to be freed up quickly for users.
"The HP JetDirect Connectivity Card delivers reliable, cost-effective printer connectivity to a broad base of customers," said Kirstine Mayall, JetDirect Product Manager. "By adding USB, serial and LocalTalk support to our connectivity portfolio, we're continuing to provide our customers with simple and powerful solutions to fit virtually any computing environment."
Driving Adoption of USB
The new JetDirect Connectivity Card addresses the needs of today's users who need to access printers via USB ports. The USB port enables simple printer connectivity with PowerMacs and Windows 98 PCs. USB also lets users connect many peripherals at one time. Many USB PCs come with two USB ports. Special USB peripherals, called USB hubs, have additional ports that enable users to "daisy chain" multiple devices to a single PC.
"The market is moving toward USB at an incredible pace," said Paula Bursley, senior analyst at Dataquest, a Gartner Group company. "Printer connectivity solutions will be a necessary ingredient to fuel the next wave of growth."
About USB
The USB specification, a standardised peripheral connection developed by industry leaders, supports multiple-device connectivity, improves the performance of the peripheral connection and allows for digital multimedia integration. USB supports multiple peripheral devices, allowing users to run printers, scanners, digital cameras and speakers simultaneously from a single PC.
Pricing and Availability
The HP JetDirect Connectivity Card is GBP89 and is expected to be available Sept. 1 through retailers and HP-authorised distributors and resellers, as well as online via the HP Shopping Village at www.shopping.hp.com.
According to industry analysts, HP is the recognised leader in connecting and managing printers on networks. Since 1991, HP has sold more than 12 million HP JetDirect internal and external print servers, and provides the industry-leading printer-management software, Web JetAdmin, making it the world's leading supplier of network printing solutions.

Inquiry over dolphins.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
The Royal Navy carried out live-firing exercises off Cornwall just hours before 25 dolphins died by stranding themselves in a nearby river, the Ministry of Defence has admitted. As initial autopsies suggested the dolphins might have been scared or disorientated, MoD officials said training exercises with a submarine and survey ship using sonar had also been held in Falmouth Bay. Campaigners called for an urgent inquiry into any possible connection.
