Vic: Fraser calls for dramatic Lib overhaul in Victoria
Former prime minister MALCOLM FRASER says the Victorian Liberal Party has lurched right
.. become dangerously factionalised .. and needs a dramatic overhaul if it's to survive.
Mr FRASER .. who was prime minister from 1975 to 1983 .. has told The Age newspaper
the party is controlled by ideological conservatives who stifle dissent .. and are driving
thousands of rank-and-file members away.
The newspaper says Mr FRASER has sent an e-mail to leading Liberals that calls for
the party's head office to release its control of preselections at state and federal level.
He says preselections should be decided by a plebiscite .. with senate candidates ..
who are now chosen by a central panel .. chosen by a poll of all Victorian party members.
Mr FRASER says this would make it much harder for a faction to control that broader group.
He also says it's important for the power of individual members to be re-established
.. and for branches be re-emphasised.
