NSW: Man arrested after crashing during police pursuit

SYDNEY, April 24 AAP - A driver crashed into a concrete pylon during a police pursuit
in the Illawarra, police said today.

Police were carrying out speed checks at Five Island Bridge, near Cringila, south of
Wollongong, about 4pm (AEST) yesterday when they detected a Ford utility allegedly travelling
at more than 100kph in an 80kph zone.

The officers attempted to stop the ute and pursued it a short distance after it continued
driving.

The driver lost control of the vehicle in Birmingham Street, mounting the kerb and
striking a concrete pylon.

The 20-year-old driver escaped injury and police arrested him, charging him with low
range drink driving, dangerous and negligent driving, speeding and failing to obey a police
direction.

The man, from Windang, was granted bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court next month.
