SA: Youth poll shows first hand experience of suicide

A national survey has found more than half of young Australians know someone who has
committed or attempted suicide.

The Australian Democrats' Youth Poll shows 57 per cent of respondents aged between
15 and 20 know a young person who's taken their life or attempted suicide.

The survey, conducted annually, asks young people for their opinions and experiences
in a range of areas, including job security, sex education, drugs, refugees, voting and
the environment.

This year, 80 per cent have said they want access to free birth control and 60 per
cent support the installation of condom vending machines in schools.

More than two-thirds believe the federal government should enter a treaty with indigenous
Australians, 60 per cent don't support mandatory detention of asylum seekers, and 59 per
cent think Australia should become a republic.
