CANBERRA, Jan 1 AAP - After 23 years in the wilderness of seemingly unending opposition,
Labor had finally won the election of December 2, 1972 and was intent on making up for
lost time.
New Prime Minister Gough Whitlam didn't wait until all the votes were counted before
getting on with the job.
He formed a duumvirate with his deputy Lance Barnard on December 5 with the pair making
40 government decisions, effectively ruling the nation by media release.
