Vic: Hospital union happy at renewed talks after blockade

A hospital workers' union that blockaded a Melbourne hospital kitchen yesterday has
begun talks with management.

Workers locked themselves in the Monash Medical Centre Kitchen and refused to prepare
breakfast for patients.

Health Services Union state secretary PAULINE FEGAN says staff have been propping up
a crumbling hospital system for too long.

She says the union will no longer tolerate staff shortages which put workers and patients
in danger.

The entire Southern Health Care Network, including Dandenong Hospital, has been plagued
by work bans on collection of rubbish and linen, patient transfers and other cleaning
duties since last Thursday.

The bans have been lifted for at least two weeks to allow time for negotiations.
