FED: Howard firm on salmon
HOBART, Aug 3 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has ruled out blocking the import of raw
salmon.
Mr Howard told a Liberal Party lunch here, attended by fishermen anxious for federal
intervention, that overturning an Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) decision
which allows the imports would trigger trade retaliation from Canada.
But he said Trade Minister Mark Vaile and Agriculture Minister Warren Truss would meet
industry groups in the next week to discuss their concerns.
"I believe there are some aspects of the decision taken by AQIS that has been the cause of
some misunderstanding," he said.
